Inktober 2015 #1: Ghost Persona

killing two birds with one stone. First #Inktober of 2015 and also my new icon for the month of October on my social networks.

used a Pigma Micron 05 and a new (ink cartridge) Pentel Brush pen

I need to look into getting an Instagram… maybe do that tonight (even though I should be doing homework)

Promise I'll get to posting art again soon

I really do promise.

LOTS of things have happened. Mostly good things. The Sawdust Art Festival was of course great over the summer, always sad when it has to end… Another REALLY GREAT one being that because of a generous (and anonymous) donor to my college, I got to return to school!  So… getting back into doing homework has been interesting. I never thought I'd be so happy to do homework and study for tests.

Another AWESOME bit would be that I got to help some friends on a Master Class animation project :D I even got credit as 'Animator' as well as 'Clean Up Artist' (the number 34 will forever be showing up in my personal animation work now ;) so proud of that scene)

Can't show it though, not until it's done its festival run

though, that's kinda bittersweet for me… because the people I was hoping to share this great news with the most, are no longer with us. Still missing my grandparents - a lot

but I know they wouldn't want me to dwell. They'd want me to keep moving forward.

SO, things coming up are:

Inktober - going to be taking part in that again, so you'll be seeing those (hoping to maybe break out Windsor colored inks if I have the time to play with those)

my school's Rush Night - hoping to have something I'm happy with to turn in (and post) by the 1st

my Layout class work - I am SUPER stoked to finally be in this class, and my professor seems to like what I've planned out so far. so I'll definitely be wanting to share this work

3D modeling - another class I'm excited to be in because this round, I get to 'play' with Zbrush AND real clay. I'm hoping to have some work I feel good about posting

Animal Drawing - YES! I ger to have another class with Marshall Vandruff!! will probably share mostly any gesture drawings from this until closer to Midterms

CTNexpo - AW YEEAH! I haven't signed up for any portfolio reviews this year (next year for sure though). Last year was a little overwhelming since I hadn't been to a convention in a few years. THIS year, I plan on soaking up as much knowledge, advice, and any impromptu critique I can fit in my schedule. Also, this time I hope to be able to either buy a cintique or maaaaaaybe TVpaint… I've set aside "no touchy" money specifically for this (or I'll just keep it aside for emergency purposes… my rational side keeps advocating for this)

that's all I really have planned for now. Have a quiz I need to be rested up for tomorrow

Another post dry spell, but for a good reason

been busy, busy, busy!

Sorry about the few posts yet again. I've been busy helping with clean-up animation on a short project. We should be done with it in the next week, and I'll be able to share more about it later :D

And we're half-way through the Sawdust Festival! I can't believe it. Only one more month left - I'm gonna miss it. But it seems Kids Art Alley has been a success again, classes are filled almost every night. (this night might be a bit scarce, I haven't seen as many kids on the grounds, but that may change by this evening) oh, which reminds me, I've got new coloring pages I need to scan in...

Take care all, and thanks for dropping by! :)

Disney Vaca sketches

my best friend came out to visit me, and treated us to a 3 Day Disneyland "Magical Chaos Adventure". She had never been to D*land (D* World yes, but not D*land), and I was so happy she wanted to share that first D*land experience with me!
Didn't bring a camera this time (she brought one and took some awesome pics), but decided to make this a sketch trip - since I hadn't been drawing for myself much with the freelance job I had. You can definitely tell the difference between the first few pages and the last. It felt so good to be sketching again!

Magical Chaos Sketch Chronicles:

started off with a brush pen...
…but wasn't really feeling it. Moved on to a Pigma Pen 05 - definitely enjoyed it more. We actually rode Pirates and Mansion first, but the lines were so short there was no time to sketch. Star Tours on the other hand…oh! and it was the first time she rode the new version. Someday, I WILL be the Rebel Spy!

Then of course Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters after that… and then an attempt to draw the Mark Twain, which ended up looking like a birthday cake (or maybe a Merry Merry Unbirthday Cake)
how in the world can that be comfortable, kid?! And I liked that gal's skirt.

Went to CA about mid-day for Grizzly River Rapids and I'll give you three guesses as to who got soaked, and the first two don't count...
and then back to D*land for our dinner reservation at Cafe Orleans because I told her about the Monte Cristo (which I had only just learned about and tried myself - heard the Halleluja Chorus, not even lying) and sketched while waiting for our reservation time. Wished I had had my watercolors with me. Those twins were adorable, one in red and the other in yellow. Then it was Monte Cristo time!

We also got fast-passes for World of Color.
The next day we started off on Space Mountain…and ended up back at Star Tours! lol

Then, made our way back over to CA to ride the Tower of Terror (I made the mistake of sitting in the center. baaaaaad idea for me).
And everything had around an hour long (or more) wait time for their lines, so we went over to Soarin' Over California, and got some good people sketching done while in line.

And back over to D*land! Gave our feet a break and rode the train.
 Had lunch at Carnation Cafe…

IT'S A TRAP!!! oh wait, no, just Star Tours again :D
My bestie had never seen the Enchanted Tikki Room! This had to be remedied!!

We headed back over to CA to play Midway Mania - it had been down but the line was still long. Twas time for more people sketching!
And back over to D*land to ride another staple: Jungle Cruise

…which had problems when we were about halfway through the line.
...but we stuck it out, and got to eventually see, THE BACKSIDE OF WATER!!

More Train sketching...

And more Star Tours! To be fair, we rode Pirates, Mansion, and Tower of Terror just as many times. And then went ahead and tried for Monsters Inc. (this was the only one I was really annoyed with, line-wise, since the wait was much much MUCH longer than what was posted, and soured my mood for the ride.)
Last day with bestie, and we head [back] over to the House of Blues.

And then beignets, and one last sketch of another tired Disney-guest. (loved her shoes!)

Sawdust Festival is almost HERE!

and I was asked to do this Summer's coloring pages for the kids! Super humbled about this. And I got the okay from my manager to share them, so here we go!

(didn't add my sig, because I don't recall seeing any signatures on the previous years coloring pages)

The festival has these available online to print and color for the kids (BONUS: it get's you a free kid's admission to the Sawdust Art Festival). You can print them here and they've got some other great promotions for certain days on that page too.

I can ALMOST share everything I've been working on...

but not quite ;)

Still can't show the character (or where you'll be seeing him) just yet, but the backgrounds for the different main pieces are a different story, you've seen some peppered here an there, but here they are all together! (they'll be in order from first "ordered" to last):

(the shadows are a bit dodgy in the chuck-wagon one, due to character placement and not wanting it any more "busy" behind him to be distracting)

So there we are! I honestly can't wait to show you guys everything and let you know where/what it's for (hopefully I'll be able to hop on the next project here within the next week and get that done soon too!)

thanks for dropping by! :D

Short Commissions are OPEN!!

Hey everybody!

I've got a 2 month window between [W2 type] jobs, and figured it's the perfect time to work on personal projects, and supplement my income with… COMMISSIONS!!

I'm opening up smaller $20-$25 commissions to try and not over-extend myself just before the Sawdust Festival. Here's the info :

These'll really help me out guys, but if you can't order any, please signal boost the info to help an artist out with rent, gas, and food money.

take care everyone! :)

Getting close to that Deadline!

my deadline is the 15th and I'm gonna make it (come hell or high-water, I'm going to make it!)

Two of the last three BG's are done (besides the signage and color adjustments once I put in the character):

and the other is getting there (I should be finished it by tonight):

So my lack of updates here was due to me posting my WIP progress on Fb rather than here (whoops)

I will probably be starting up commissions here soon, so there's that too...

Summer is almost here guys (in the Northern Hemisphere)! And I'm hoping to get a good head-start on some personal projects that were set on the "back burner" before the Sawdust Festival starts again, and then it's back to teaching! :D

Take care everyone, and thanks for dropping by

"redraw it!"

you know those "redraw it" memes?
I'm applying that to some old animated projects
one is my 30 second scene, and the other is my first dialogue scene.
here's an example:

the one on the left being the older version (frame #17)
and the right being the re-work

I'd like to get this done before the semester ends, but we'll see - I've still got other projects that take precedence, but I just wanted to give an update on my little side-projects :)

take care, everybody! and thanks for dropping by :D

My hand works again, therefore I can work again

I seriously did not know what to do with myself yesterday when I couldn't work. And I was starting to feel incredibly down.
But thanks to some wonderfully kind words on another piece I had done, as well as my hand no longer being in pain, I am back to work with gusto today!

have I mentioned how much I adore the Blob Brush in Illustrator? Because I do! and the Eraser Brush along with it. They allow me to 'sketch' a rough silhouette and then go back and adjust later :3
of course, drawing a desert scene makes me incredibly homesick…

I may not have it quite as graphically styles, but Maurice Noble is my touchstone for this BG in progress (which I think is fitting since the character I designed is heavily Chuck Jones/Looney Tunes inspired - but I can't show him till the entire project is revealed :/ )

keep moving forward guys, even in your 'deserts' you can find some life! :)

I just wanted to see this 'Bot happy...

seriously, the last issue Rung was in, he looked so pensive (in "our" timeline at least). And in the latest issue we get to learn about the doom… er... SUPER HAPPY FUNTIMES heading towards the Lost Light crew.

ended up using this piece to practice shading with gradients and using textures. Coloring cues come from Alex Milne's (who is a god of Perspective, and you can't convince me otherwise) character sheets and Josh Perez's (Dyemooch - his coloring always makes me feel like I've walked into a candy store •OwO• ) cover art color pallets. (the free space bg is also Perez's, btw)

think I'm finally getting comfortable at drawing robots… :3

okay done with fun/fan art for awhile. back to art that will get me paid. *kicks at ground*

hope your day is going well everybody, and thanks for dropping by! :)

So we threw a Faculty Appreciation Day -

for our Animation Professors yesterday (because they honestly don't get enough appreciation).
I didn't get to take too many pics, but I got to do one of the caricatures! 8D!

I got our Figure Drawing for Animator's Prof. Larissa (who also happens to be my boss for OC Art Studios)

If all of the caricatures get posted, I'm going to add the link, because there were seriously awesome ones!

Everyone did a great job helping (thanks for putting up with my anal-side when it comes to serving food guys - it's hard to purge that part of you when you worked in food service for years). Decorations looked great. We…kinda... might of… tripped a breaker when we plugged one too many electric griddles into one line - we were in a completely different space than last time, so I didn't realize there wasn't the same ampage going into this other room. There were also gifts for each professor and we had a Piñata. I'm so happy with how it turned out!

let those teachers that have helped you along the way, know how much you care guys! they honestly don't hear it enough, and they deserve to.

(EDIT: SHE LIKED IT! I'M SO HAPPY! - do you have any idea how frightening it is to do a drawing for a figure drawing teacher, while you're trying to make sure you get the anatomy right, but still push the caricature?!)

Made/Making new business cards

And I still want to do a couple more variant faces. These guys fold, so on the outside you have either of these, and the contact info on the other side, while the inside has a surprise! :)

and a Happy Easter everyone!  whether you celebrate it or not, I hope you have great day :)

Clothesline Project

My school is participating in the Clothesline Project, a project that brings attention to abuse against women. And since I've got work to do, I couldn't be there. But I wanted to do something to show support
here's a link to what the different shirt colors represent :)
http://www.clotheslineproject.org/aboutshirts.htm

please know that if you're in an abusive relationship, there are people who believe you when you call for help. You can get out. There are places to go to be safe. And there are people who will support you.

I have a robot addiction

And it can totally be traced back to my brother sitting me down with him to watch Transformers when it first came out. Yep, all his fault ;)

Thinking about doing a "my favorite robots" kind of compilation (freelance project permitting, as I'm seriously making blitz runs working on it, and it's draining me)

but the idea came when I was drawing this WIP to de-stress:
(hi Rung!)
and I considered my tag "i have a robot addiction" and realized I've never really drawn any of my other fav robots. I should amend that :)

so yes, another side project to add to the ever growing pile. oh, the never ending artist problems…(and I still need to find time to sneak out and get some actual animation done!!)

take care of yourselves, and thanks for dropping by!

back to TA'ing this week

and this time I took part in the beginning 15 minute exercise. This one, we take one of our characters and draw them in the style of another artist.
Couldn't decide on one till about half-way through. It was so hard to pick! I did finally choose Chuck Jones :)
I didn't really try to go for his stuff after Grinch, but his mid-years while on Looney Tunes. With more time, I probably could have gotten even closer.
Then we had a treat in class. Got to watch Song of the Sea, and the professor literally (honest-to-God) told everyone to work on fan-art for it, or to do art inspired by it. I was encouraged to participate again (yay! work and play!)
so I merged the two 'exercises' and came up with these versions of my characters:

I got too involved in watching the movie to get to my last character, but I really had fun with these!
Think I figured out a working title too: What the Stars Say
kinda like the sound of that :)

hope you guys didn't have too hard of a day on this April Fools. Don't worry, it's almost over!

WonderCon

turns out I'm getting to go on Saturday!! Besides CTN, I haven't been to a Con in years, so I'm super stoked (and a little overwhelmed, I've been out of the Con loop for so long…)

hoping I'll be able to meet up with some friends and get to meet some of the artists I admire. wonder what the Panel situation is going to be like…

if anything, it's going to be a great chance to do some 'cafe sketches' :D

when things like this happen to me, this is the song that always plays in my head:

take care all! :)

Who knew

Who new it would take so long to make bamboo? :/ but here we go
I'm just sad that most of it will be covered up once I get the title in there.
I've actually moved on to re-adjusting the character's pose and tweaking his costume a bit. But his set is done! woo-hoo! Sadly though, that means this is all I get to show you until the entire project is unveiled. But it'll be worth it.

And I'm off to make the 3 o'clock deadline! :D

have a great day/night all!!

Sunday, March 29, 2015

That's a bit better

still might move the wall down, but NOW it looks like it's finally getting somewhere. It's just a matter of putting in a few more flora into the "courtyard" and placing the character and title. Then DONE with another banner…

maybe change the sky a bit too… we'll see.

hope you're Palm Sunday is going well everybody! :)
