Grendel

Last semester for our quadruped run assignment we had to pick adjectives out of a box and have our four-legged creature run in that fashion.  I got "stupid".  I thought that might be a little harsh, so I figured "derpy" would prove just as effective.  Well, the summer previous, my family and I went up to Washington State to visit my grand folks and there I became acquainted with the two resident pugs: Ace and Grendel, two derpy pugs that I could not wait for the excuse to animate, Grendel in particular... and here it was the time had come!

and I'd love to show you those frames separated, but apparently the file is too big :/   I will work on that, but in the meantime here's a character sheet I did up to help me out with the 30 second film I'll be working on this semester:

And now it's class time, thanks for dropping in :)

Something New

figured I might as well share this little animation :)
for anyone who know my character Anne, she's changed a lot design-wise to make her more animatable, but the personality is still there ;)
just a quick 2 second animation where the character has to enter from off screen, look left and right, and then exit completely off screen.

Old Stuff!

well, hello again! I've got about a half hour before my animation class and felt like sharing some old pieces from previous semesters....except those from my first college...we don't talk about that
are you ready?
I'll start with my first semester at LCAD (Laguna College of Art and Design):

Comp and Color!

this is the first piece I did that I was actually proud of for the class.  The assignment was basically this: you had to create either a city or forest environment, use only greyscale to create depth, and make it dynamic.  The perspective is a little wonky with this, but I hadn't finished my perspective class just yet either.  I have a color piece that was for another project in this class, but until I find that, it'll just be this piece for comp and color that you guys see.

Visual Storytelling!

This is a page from my final project in Vis. storytelling (my professor was Marshal Vandruff, and if you ever get a chance to meet him/take his classes/go to any of his seminars I HIGHLY recommend it).  The project was to create a "Little Nemo"-esk story that either used the same story-structure style, the same characters, the same drawing style, or a combination of all.  You could either make it into a comic or into storyboards. You can see which I chose. This was my favorite page out of the whole bunch (12 in all I think).  And you can see I'm trying to push myself with perspective again, though we hadn't gone over 3 point perspective in my Perspective class yet, so yeeeaaah.  Still love it though.

Photoshop!
Now I had used Photoshop before, but not frequently, and while I could have tested out, I wanted to learn what was new.

Ah yes, my first homework assignment, where I went and used some of my fan art to play around.  With this one, I wasn't really learning anything new per say except for layout and presentation.  But I had some d* good fun doing it.  I've debated using the more graphic piece fort-shirts or coffee mugs.  Who knows...

The Final project.  Basically we were given free reign to do what we wanted.  I chose this, but my goal was to try and make it look like it came out of the 30's-40's and that is was either watercolor or colored ink.  My comic lettering obviously has suffered from back in my high school days and trying to get characters to have that "rubber-hose"look is more difficult than you think...

This was my favorite project out of everything in this class.  Basically we took a photo that we had to have taken ourselves and then render it to look like a painting.  I learned some really awesome tricks on this assignment and am planning on using them on a new personal project soon.

Fundamentals of Animation!

Ah yes, the final Restaurant scene.  Basically the character (we had to use studio characters and attempt to keep them on-model) had to be at a restaurant/somewhere eating, start with one emotion - end with another, and have some kind of take.  Watching it now, I see things I would definitely change, but at the time it wasn't so bad :)

And there we have it.  Those are some of my favorites from my first semester at LCAD, I'll share some from my last semester later in the future (not necessarily right away though).  Thanks for taking the time  to look at my old stuff.  It's always good to see where you've been talent-wise, to give yourself perspective, and it was great sharing it with you all :)

Hello!

I've been told many times that I should start an art blog, and after dragging my feet as long as I could, here I am!  Mostly what you'll find here for awhile are pieces from school, with my own personal projects scattered here an there.  What I'm trying to accomplish by starting this is to get over my anxiety of showing my art to people and thinking my work is not good enough - which does NOT help me in the career goal I have, which is to work in Animation.  SO, let me just start by posting a colored Key of one of my favorite animation exercises.
This 'lil pug is Grendel.  And I plan to be using this ball of derpyness as the star for my 30 second film at the end of this semester.  I suppose that's all for now, life and the day job calls!  Hope ya'll enjoy your visit(s) here :)
